Grammar ~ The Giving and Receiving of Actions

In the Japanese language there is the concept of giving or receiving an action. We don’t really have this concept in English and just use the word ‘for’  if someone does something for someone else. E.g ‘My sister wrote my sakubun for me’.

But in Japanese, it’d literally translate to:　My sister gave me the writing of my sakubun.

In order to do this, we need to use the て form of the verb + くれる／あげる／もらう
Reminder:　くれる：give (in the direction of the speaker) • あげる：give (に marks the recipient) • もらう：receive (に marks the giver.)

*By using くれます you attach a feeling a gratitude to the sentence. “My sister kindly wrote my sakubun for me.”

First you have to choose the right one, which is bloody difficult sometimes and makes me want to never give anything to anyone ever again. Therefore, GRAPH TIME:

2. Who is receiving: Me (私に)
3. ANSWER: くれる
4. Verb:　書きますー＞書いて

姉は(私に)さくぶんを書いてくれました。

I made sushi for Mr. Miller <3 ー＞　私はミーラさんにすしをつくってあげました。
Mr. Miller gave them to Mr. Schmidt ー＞　ミーらさんはシミトさんに私のすしをあげました。

Tense examples

Mr. Yamada reads to Mrs. Tanaka
山田さんは田中さんに読んであげます。
山田さんは田中さんに読んであげる。

Mr. Yamada does not read to Mrs. Tanaka
山田さんは田中さんに読んであげません。
山田さんは田中さんによんであがない。

Mr. Yamada read to Mrs. Tanaka.
山田さんは田中さんに読んであげました。
山田さんは田中さんによんであげた。

Mr. Yamada didn’t read to Mrs. Tanaka.
山田さんは田中さんによんであげませんでした。
山田さんは田中さんに読んであげなかった。
